Enhance Your Vocabulary by Learning The Dictionary

Please forgive me if I use some of the same text to introduce each exercise, but some people might be seeing the exercise for the first time, and I would not like them to miss out on the introductory exercises.

When I was a student at Teacher Training College during the sixties,-64 to 67; we were sent out on teaching practice in the various surrounding schools. One of the most important things our Tutors looked for was our -Lesson Plans- A successful lesson needed proper planning, and if you failed teaching practice the entire 3years went up in smoke.

I do not recall if I was ever taught strategically -how to learn the Dictionary- Nor can I recall ever teaching it. Our method for enhancing the vocabulary was mainly by reading and conversation. Word stitch will be used as a tool to grow the vocabulary by learning the dictionary.

Have you ever tried reading the dictionary from cover to cover as you would read a book? I know I never thought of it until Word Stitch.

The plan is to select reading and studying the words according to words beginning with the letters in the alphabet; we are going to start with the 4 letters with the least number of words in the dictionary, namely Q. X.Y. Z.

Practice makes Perfect

To be good at any sport, you have to practice and train regularly, you can’t expect to win the hundred meters by just walking on to the track and running, neither can you expect to shoot 40 points in a basket ball game unless you have prepared yourself properly, the same goes for sports, cricket, golf, baseball, rugby tennis, hockey or any sport.

Imagine you are preparing for the Word Stitch championship; the next series of lessons will help prepare you for the championship. Some day I would love to see some one sponsor a TV Word Stitch Championship

There is a reason why I chose the letters with the least number of words, it is to stay true to the title, -learning made easy-

This exercise is a revision exercise, be patient, we will cover the entire dictionary, but it will take time. you would have observed that many of the words begin with the letters Q. X,Y, Z are words you may never have used in a conversation, That is why you should read the words out loud, so you can hear yourself repeating them.

When you find a word that is new to your vocabulary, look up the meaning and try to use the word in a sentence before going on the 1,2,and 3.

The exercise requires discipline, but you will reap the benefits.

Read all the words from the dictionary begin with the letters Q, X, Y, Z

1. Write down as many words as you can begin with the 4 letters

2. Create as many 4-word sentences using the letters in the order posted

3. Create as many 4-word sentences using the letters in any order.

4. When you have finished the exercise, challenge someone to a game; after you have won, introduce them to the learning process in the exercise.
